Proudly Walking My Way Back to Health

Posted on Posted in General Article

My uncle used to say, “a proud walk beats a poor ride.  But I’d rather be riding”   I wonder if he really knew how good it is to walk each day.  Walking on a regular basis encourages good eating habits, improves your sleep, mood and memory and burns fat.  It is one of the exercise routines you can start anytime, and reap huge health benefits from, without buying expensive exercise equipment.  You can walk away the pounds indoors or out, alone or in a group, and you don’t have to pay a dime to any club or fitness center to reap the benefits.

Prior to having knee replacement surgery, I was limited in my walking because of the loss of cushioning cartilage.  Walking was extremely painful, but I loved it so much, I ambled about as much as I could, icing my swollen knees afterward.  I longed for the day when I could simply step up on the curb without bracing myself for the searing pain in the knee as my weight shifted to the left leg.  I practically dragged my left leg along because bending it was hard to bear, especially in damp, rainy weather.

Thankfully, a friend told me about using the benefits of wearing really good walking shoes and where to get them.  But I went one better and searched  Groupon to see if I could find any deals for The Walking Company.  Voila!  Several deals popped up when I did my search.  Through Groupon, I discovered I could save 50% off end of season sales on name brand shoes like Uggs, Abeo, Dansko clogs and more.  They also offered a great deal just for signing up for their newsletter, plus promo codes and exclusives that will save me money on future purchases.  By the time I had surgery, I was walking much better because I had on the sturdiest shoes money could buy.  A walking shoe is just that, it’s for walking, not running.  I never knew the difference.

Post-surgery physical therapy was tough at times.  Stretching and bending hurt like hell, but I was determined to stick it out and I’m so glad I did.  I was back to walking three miles a day in less than four months and felt great.  Wearing the right kind of shoe was the key to walking my way to a successful recovery.  And I really felt like a winner for getting such great deals on top quality shoes with Groupon.
